Golden Sky Stories: Twilight Tales

Created by Star Line Publishing

Golden Sky Stories: Twilight Tales (originally released in Japan as Mononoke Koyake) is the first Japanese supplement for Golden Sky Stories, and it adds the mononoke as a new set of character types for players and narrators alike. Each has a signature character, but they’re also easy to reskin to be any number of creatures. The rules for the kappa also let you play other aquatic creatures like mermaids, and where the signature visitor is an alien, your visitor could be a time traveler, a winter fairy, or even Santa Claus. The book will also feature an intro comic and scenarios to help you get started using mononoke in your stories.

PDFs, Printing, Tsukumogami, and Retailers

Hi everyone! I hope you’re ready for a good Memorial Day weekend. (Or if you’re not in the U.S. a good normal weekend?) Things are moving along nicely. We finished with corrections to Twilight Tales, and I uploaded it to DriveThruRPG (though it’s not publicly available just yet) and sent out download codes to backers. If you didn’t get a download code, first check your spam folder just in case, and if it still hasn’t arrived, contact us with your DTRPG account email address. I’ve also now sent download codes for the core rulebook and supplements to all the backers who should be receiving them, so again if yours are missing, get in touch and we’ll get you sorted out.

Printing News

The files for both Twilight Tales and the Golden Sky Stories reprint are off to the printer, and that whole process is underway. Yesterday I got an initial proof of GSS. This is a set of all the materials that go into the book in an approximation of their final form so that we can check that the content is in order and the general form—the weight of paper and so on—are in order. (Hence the all-white cover with information about the proofing process on it.) This one turned out nicely, so I approved it and am now waiting on a proof of Twilight Tales. This is the same printer we used before, because we were really happy with both their service and the quality of the finished book

Tsukumogami

Kamapon also sent me the art for the group of tsukumogami. Rather than just the ones described in the book, I asked her to include some modern ones, hence there’s an animated game console and rice cooker, alongside more classic tsukumogami like the bakezori and kasa-obake.

Retailers

Finally, I wanted to give a quick shout-out to our three General Store level backers:

  • EndGame is an amazing game store located in the heart of Oakland. They carry a bit of everything to do with games, ranging from puzzles and old classics to an impressive selection of independent RPGs, and have a really nice play space.
  • Legends Comics and Games is a game and comics store with locations in Capitola and Santa Clara. Back when they were in Cupertino I used to go there all the time and spent a frankly excessive amount on RPG books. They carry a bit of everything geeky, including comics ranging from the big superhero stuff to independents, all kinds of RPGs and board games, and figures and other goodies.
  • Sphärenmeisters Spiele is a game store in Germany, which has a genuinely impressive selection of RPGs in both German and English.

Deck of Dreams Proof!
almost 6 years ago – Sun, May 06, 2018 at 01:07:10 AM

Just a quick update: the proof of the Deck of Dreams came from DriveThruRPG today, so have a look!

If you're wondering, the card in the upper left shows konpeito, a kind of Japanese rock candy, while the card in the lower right shows kamifusen, a toy ball/balloon made of paper.

Right now the big thing we're working on is getting everything ready to reprint Golden Sky Stories and print Twilight Tales. We made some tweaks to GSS here and there, and we'll be making kind of a lot of edits to Twilight Tales (and extra thanks to everyone who commented with corrections!). I'm feeling pretty good about our ability to get those done and sent to the warehouse so that fulfillment can begin in a timely fashion. I also shipped out the last of the wall scrolls yesterday, so everyone who pledged at a level that includes a wall scroll should either have it already or have it on the way. (Since they're 32" long they have to go in shipping tubes separate from everything else.)

I did my first playtest of the a couple of the new character types (specifically the western fox and witch's cat) with some friends, using the Present Thunder scenario. They'll need a few tweaks, but they're both definitely showing a lot of promise. If you've had a chance to try out any of the new character types, we'd love to hear about your experiences!

A Look at the Deck of Dreams
almost 6 years ago – Wed, Apr 25, 2018 at 01:26:12 AM

Clay just sent in the files for the Deck of Dreams, and he did an amazing job because of course he did. If you were waiting to see them to make up your mind, or if you just want a sneak peek at what you’ll be getting, here it is!

This is a mockup of the tuckbox that it’ll come in. DriveThruRPG uses a fairly unique glue-less design for their tuckboxes, and I’ve found the results are pretty nice.

The actual cards are pretty simple, consisting of watercolor art of traditional Japanese stuff (which I bought from a Japanese stock photo site), combined with a different encouraging little phrase on each card. (The design for the card backs looks basically the same as the front of the box.) There will be 54 of them—the same number of cards as in a poker deck—which in my experience is about the right number for Dream tokens in Golden Sky Stories.

Thanks again to Charles E. Miller for suggesting the idea, for all of you for supporting this project enough for us to be able to include this very pretty stretch goal, and of course to Clay for making it a reality.

The Deck of Dreams is currently available as an add-on in BackerKit for $10, and it’ll also be available for purchase from DriveThruRPG. If you get it as an add-on, it'll be included in your package of Golden Sky Stories goodies for this Kickstarter.
